Dental bridges are an excellent way to replace a missing tooth. They can also be used to replace several missing teeth. Patients have the option to get what type of bridge they want, but a partial denture or removable bridges may better suit the budget.

Traditional Bridges

Most bridges consist of an artificial tooth attached to a real tooth on both sides. This gives it stability and it is permanent. This type of bridge can also be used to replace more than one tooth. The teeth on each side are generally treated by removing the enamel and a crown is placed on top of them. The artificial tooth is cemented between them.

Removable Bridges

This type of bridge is also called a partial, and it can be used to replace one or more teeth. It is built on a plastic and metal base that attaches to the existing teeth with clasps. It can be easily removed and replaced at any time for cleaning.

The artificial teeth are colored to match the color of your other teeth. This makes them look natural when properly put in.

Caring for Bridges

Bridges that are removable need to be cared for to protect them. They are breakable if you drop them. Also, if hot water is applied to them they may warp and not fit well at all. Cleaning them should always be done with cool water. They should never be left to soak in water because parts of it may rust.

Partials and Dental Implants

Dental implants can also be used to support dentures that can be removed. This makes the partial more stable – just like your natural teeth, which makes it much easier to talk and eat. They can also be removed easily for cleaning and then put back in.

Placing dental implants is a surgical procedure. Gums must be healthy and there must be sufficient bone to support it. Some dentists will provide teeth in a day with crowns or dentures on the day the implants are installed – others will not do this. After the installation, healing of the gums and bone, which means they attach to the implant, will normally take between three to six months.

Getting Adjusted to It

When you first start wearing the new bridge, the dentist will likely ask you to wear it for some time and not remove it. Although it may not be comfortable at first, the dentist will need you to wear it constantly to determine where it is tight and hitting the gums. Once this is noticed, it can be adjusted for a more perfect fit.

Making the Choice

Deciding which option is best for you will need to be discussed between you and the dentist. While bridges that are removable are less costly than implants, they are not as durable. On the other hand, an implant may last a lifetime.
