About a Dental Veneer

A dental veneer is a thin cap of material, usually porcelain or ceramic, that fits over the front of your teeth. If your teeth are slightly misaligned, it can also correct that problem.

The Preparation

In most cases, some of the enamel on the front of your teeth will need to be removed. Most people do not need any anesthetic during this process.

Once the dentist ensures that you are a good candidate for them, the dentist will likely take an x-ray of your teeth first. Then, a mold will be taken of your teeth, but this step may also be performed digitally – removing the need for a mold. A temporary veneer will be added by the dentist to protect the teeth until the caps arrive from the lab.

Two Types

Porcelain caps are made in a lab. They are bonded to the front of your teeth and will correct the problems once they are in place. This type will look more natural and it is stronger and more durable. It can last about 15 years if cared for properly.

The other type of veneer is made from a resin composite material. It is pasted on to the front of your teeth and then shaped by the dentist. This type is less expensive and can be expected to last between five to seven years.

Color Matching

The color of your porcelain veneer can be made to match the color of your existing teeth. The dentist will hold the veneer in place to check on the fit and color and then may repeat it two or three times to ensure it is correct. The shape may also be adjusted a few times as well. The color of the tooth is altered by the color of the glue beneath it.

Once the new caps are in place, the dentist will apply a special light to them. This light will harden the glue quickly by activating some of the chemicals in it, which will make it very strong.
